Dr. Jack
Way back when cars had square wheels and I was 5, I can remember one summer day a boy in the neighborhood
was trying to put the chain back on his bicycle and he was having difficulty. I walked to his yard, flipped
his small bike upside down, and put his chain back on. I guess he was my first customer. Later at the age
of 9, I remember my aunt calling out to my cousin not to let “Jackie” take the phonograph apart and you
guessed it, I did!
During my high school years in Chicago, Illinois, I excelled in Auto Shop and, in fact, I was selected to
represent my school in the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest. After graduating, I worked my way up from new
car department mechanic at a Buick dealership to owning my own shop in Atlanta, Georgia.
I passed my car knowledge and work ethic down to my three sons who spent many of their summers working
in my shop. This helped them develop a common sense approach to things in life and has helped them move on
to successful careers. I have had many compliments on their abilities.
Selling my successful shop in Atlanta of 16 years and moving to Cairo, Georgia allowed me to fulfill a
lifelong dream of opening an air-conditioned and heated shop to work on cars. It also allowed me to move
into the Capel neighborhood where my expenses are less as compared to those in the huge city of Atlanta.
My Atlanta customers were very unhappy that they lost their mechanic. They considered it a great personal
loss. “Atlanta’s loss was Cairo’s gain”, as one of my customer’s stated.
Over the years I have found that people don’t mind paying for repairs or maintenance that really needs
doing; but, they despise with a passion paying with their hard earned money for something that wasn’t
necessary or wasn’t broke to begin with especially in these hard times.
I have always believed if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you.
